Suni Lee wins bronze and Simone Biles wins gold; both make history as the first Olympic all-around champions to compete in the same women’s gymnastics individual all-around final

Suni Lee and Simone Biles just competed in the women’s gymnastics individual all-around final.

Suni takes home bronze and Simone takes home gold for Team USA!

This is the first time in history that two Olympic all-around champions went head-to-head in the all-around final — both being from Team USA. Simone was the all-around champion at the 2016 Rio Olympics and Suni was the all-around champion at the most recent Tokyo Olympics.

Going into the competition, due to starting values in their routines, Simone was always the favorite to win gold, with Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade predicted to win silver. Because of health issues related to an incurable kidney disease, Suni was only cleared to train for the Olympics in January of this year. That meant that the bronze medal was up for grabs and Suni narrowly beat Alice D’Amato (Italy) and Kaylia Nemour (Algeria) thanks to her stellar bars, beam, and floor routine.

As soon as Suni completed her floor routine and she was guaranteed to win a medal, Simone embraced her and said, “I’m so proud of you.”

In the end, Suni pulled through for a bronze medal with a total score of 56.465! Rebeca (Brazil) earned a total score of 57.932 to win silver, and Simone (USA) earned a total score of 59.131 to win gold.

With these wins, Suni and Simone also make history as the first U.S. Olympic gymnasts to own multiple all-around medals, according to USA Gymnastics and Team USA.
