The feud between Harry and William shows no sign of ending, a royal expert has said, and there are four major hurdles the brothers need to overcome before they can even think about patching things up

The accusations continued in the Sussexes’ Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir Spare, both released following the Queen’s passing and the commencement of King Charles’ reign. Harry alleged that his brother William physically assaulted him, accused the King of prioritising his own interests over Harry’s, and spoke of tensions between Meghan and the Princess of Wales.

Prince William and Harry’s bitter feud shows no signs of resolution with four major obstacles to overcome before they can reconcile, according to a royal expert.

With the feud seemingly far from resolution, royal author and expert Tom Quinn suggests the once-close siblings face several challenges, not limited to the discord between their wives. “The feud between Harry and William isn’t just down to the fact that their wives don’t get on. It also has a lot to do with their dysfunctional, strife-torn childhoods and Harry’s obsession with being an also-ran,” he told the Mirror US.

William and Harry experienced the tumultuous separation of their parents, Charles and Diana, in December 1992, which culminated in a divorce in August 1996. They shared parenting duties until Diana’s untimely death in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, but cracks began to appear.

Quinn explains: “As children, they spent one weekend with their mother Diana going to McDonald’s and wearing baseball caps, and the following weekend with their father shooting pheasants and wearing tweed trousers. Their parents were split, their lives were split, and being split is all they know. Harry has also always resented the fact that his mother Diana relied almost too much on William for advice and comfort Harry felt left out even back then.”

“Diana referred to William as ‘my little wise old man’ a revealing remark that suggests that she treated him far too much as if he was a friend and confidant, rather than a child. Harry felt left out. It was always likely the brothers would fall out because of these early jealousies, the pressure of the outside world, Harry’s obsession with being second best, and the final nail in the coffin – their very different wives. Harry and William might have been able to patch up their own differences but they feel they have to back their wives so any attempts to patch things up become impossibly difficult.”

The brothers have been at loggerheads since the Duke of Sussex and his wife Meghan Markle expressed their desire for a semi-detached approach to royal duties, while future king William is committed to a life of service. Ultimately, Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals during the Megxit crisis in 2020. In a high-profile interview with Oprah in 2021, they accused an unidentified royal – later alleged to be two members of the family – of making a racist remark about the skin colour their son Prince Archie might have before his birth.
