Megan Rapinoe And Whoopi Goldberg Booked Tickets To Leave America, “This Isn’t Our America”
In the wake of a divisive political climate and mounting social unrest, two women, each a trailblazer in her own right, found themselves at a crossroads.
Megan Rapinoe, the fiercely outspoken soccer star known for her activism both on and off the field, and Whoopi Goldberg, the legendary actress and comedian who had spent decades using her platform to speak truth to power, made a surprising decision. They had had enough. The America they knew and loved, the one that had always promised freedom, equality, and justice, was slipping away—and they were not willing to stand by and watch.
The decision wasn’t made in haste. For years, Rapinoe had been a staunch advocate for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ issues, and racial justice.
She had publicly criticized the country’s political leadership, especially in the wake of the Trump administration’s policies, and was vocal about the systemic racism that permeated American society. She was used to being a target, but as the nation seemed to grow more polarized, Rapinoe found herself wondering if the country she fought for would ever return to its ideals.
Whoopi Goldberg, a woman who had been in the public eye since the 1980s and known for her biting commentary on everything from race to politics, had also been feeling the weight of the country’s current trajectory.
A proud liberal and advocate for freedom of expression, Goldberg had watched as the U.S. seemed to drift further away from the inclusivity and progress she had always championed.
The rise of hate speech, the undermining of democratic institutions, and the treatment of marginalized communities had pushed her to a breaking point.
One late evening in New York, the two women sat across from one another in Whoopi’s apartment, a quiet but tense atmosphere hanging between them.
Both had recently come back from public appearances—Rapinoe from a speaking event about the importance of equal pay for women athletes, and Goldberg from a roundtable discussion on racial equity in America. Both were frustrated.
The anger was palpable. The small victories they had once celebrated now felt increasingly futile as policies were rolled back and the public discourse became ever more toxic.
“Maybe it’s time we just leave,” Megan said, her voice uncharacteristically quiet. She was staring out of the window, watching the city lights twinkle in the distance, as if searching for something—anything—that might make her feel hopeful again.
