King Charles has appeared in full royal regalia, including the Robe of State and diamond-encrusted Imperial State Crown, as Labour unveils its very first King’s Speech

Labour will “take the brakes off Britain” after unveiling its first King’s Speech today, Keir Starmer has said.

The Prime Minister set out his plans for his first year in government in the official opening of Parliament this morning.

Under the centuries-old tradition, King Charles has read the priorities set out by Mr Starmer and his top team while in full royal regalia.

The monarch wore the Robe of State and the diamond-encrusted Imperial State Crown as he delivered the message to MPs and members of the House of Lords.

Queen Camilla dazzles in diamonds

Queen Camilla has dazzled in diamond jewellery as she spends her 77th birthday with King Charles at the State Opening of Parliament.

Camilla’s big day has coincided with political pageantry and she and Charles have travelled in a carriage procession in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach to the House of Lords, where the monarch is delivering the second King’s Speech of his reign. The Queen wore an off white crepe embroided dress by Fiona Clare, which was paired with the George IV diadem tiara, a diamond collet necklace as well as diamond earrings by Van Cleef and Arpels and a diamond bracelet.

The monarch is being prepared in his full royal regalia, and will begin the speech at around 11.30.
